Most childhood cavities start in the deep grooves of back molars, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. A sealant is a thin, tooth-colored coating that fills those grooves so food and bacteria slide right off. We place them on permanent molars as they come in, usually around age 6 and again around age 12.
Fluoride varnish is a sticky, flavored coating painted on in seconds at checkups. It hardens enamel and can reverse very early soft spots. For kids with higher risk we may also suggest silver diamine fluoride, a no-drill liquid that stops small cavities from growing.
